Drivers

A printer driver is a software program that provides other software programs with
access to the printer features. Typically, you should install a printer driver for
each printer. The software CD-ROM that came with the all-in-one includes the
following Windows printer drivers:

o HP LaserJet 3015, 3020, 3030, and 3380 all-in-one PCL 6 printer driver for

Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me, and Windows NT 4.0 (all with
similar graphical user interfaces)

o HP LaserJet PostScript (R) (PS) printer drivers for Windows 95, Windows

98, Windows Me, and Windows NT 4.0 (all with similar graphical user
interfaces)

o HP LaserJet 3015, 3020, 3030, and 3380 all-in-one PCL 6 and PS printer

drivers for Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows Server 2003 (all
with similar graphical user interfaces)

Additional printer drivers might be available from online sources. See the
"Technical Assistance" section of this document or the printer user guide for more
information about obtaining printer drivers and other HP software.

HP Toolbox

The all-in-one software includes the HP Toolbox software component. The HP
Toolbox provides printer and job status information, such as jobs waiting to print,
toner and paper levels, and consumable and supplies reorder information. Use
the HP Toolbox to examine and change product settings, get access to fax and
scan software functionality, have product-alert functionality, and open
troubleshooting and "How Do I...?" help. The HP Toolbox can be configured to
appear when attention is needed at the printer.

Adobe Acrobat Reader

Use Acrobat Reader 4.05 or later version to view the online manuals. If the all-in-
one installer does not detect a PDF reader on the system, you are prompted to
install the Acrobat Reader from the software CD-ROM.

LATE BREAKING INFORMATION

KNOWN ISSUES AND WORKAROUNDS

Fax

o Running the Fax Setup Wizard in HP Toolbox provides the information to

fill in the From, Phone Number, and Fax Number fields on the Cover Page.

o After the software is first installed, someone with administrative privileges

must initiate and send a fax before any other fax can be sent.

1-3

background image

Scanning

o Some software programs have difficulty handling scans done at high

resolutions (1200 dpi or higher). If you are scanning into a program and
get an error, try scanning at a lower dpi.

o To scan to A4-size media in the HP LaserJet Scan software, type the

dimensions in the Scan Size dialog.

o After the software is first installed, someone with administrative privileges

must complete a scan before any other scan can be performed.

General

o The installation of multiple HP LaserJet 3015, 3020, 3030, or 3380 all-in-

one devices on the same computer is not supported.

o Various anomalies may occur when installing an HP LaserJet 3015, 3020,

3030, or 3380 all-in-one device on the same computer as HP Scanjet, HP
Photosmart, or HP Officejet software, depending upon the installation
order.

o Windows XP 64-bit print drivers are only available from the Web at

http://www.hp.com/go/support

. These drivers are not WHQL certified.

o If you encounter problems using the printer driver that is installed by

default (PCL6), try using the PCL5e driver. Some software programs are
specifically written in PCL5e and do not perform well with other print
drivers.

o To install print and scan drivers only, select the Minimum installation

option.

o Using the Add or Remove Software program in the HP LaserJet all-in-one

program group requires the CD-ROM.

o Adding a printer in Windows 9x or Me, when using a parallel connection

and after performing a Typical installation, takes the printer "offline" in the
Printers folder. Restarting the computer and then setting the all-in-one
device to "online" in the Printers folder resolves this issue.

o Changing the Paper Type in the Printing Preferences of the PCL6 driver

Properties from the default of "Unspecified" results in a page printed with
a PCL XL error. Either leave the Paper Type as "Unspecified" or install the
PCL5e or PS driver to print without an error.

HP Jetdirect

o The HP Jetdirect Print Server must be set for "ECP/1284.4" mode in order

to work correctly with the HP Toolbox.

o Only print functionality is available when using the IPX/SPX protocol.

o When using a multiport HP Jetdirect Print Server, the HP LaserJet all-in-

one device must be connected using Port 1.

o It is recommended that a static IP address be assigned to an HP Jetdirect

Print Server before installing the software. If the IP address changes after
you install the software, you will lose scanning and faxing functionality
from the computer.

1-4

background image

HP Toolbox

o The TCP/IP protocol must be installed on the computer to run the HP

Toolbox.

o The optimal supported browser is Microsoft (R) Internet Explorer (IE)

version 5.5 or 6.0 and later.

o The file formats that the HP Toolbox supports on the Scan to tab in Scan

Preferences are .BMP, .GIF, .JPG, .PDF and .TIFF (regular and condensed).
File formats that are listed in addition to these are not supported and will
generate an error message asking you to reinstall the software for the file
type that you requested. However, reinstalling the software will not
increase the number of file formats that are supported.

o Using Build 21 of Symantec Desktop Firewall with Windows XP can result

in a general protection fault on the computer. Updating to at least Build 25
resolves this issue.

o When exporting phone book files from Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express,

and Lotus Notes, all fields must be exported into a Comma Separated
Value (CSV) file and then imported into the HP Toolbox.

o When changing the device language by using the HP Toolbox, close the HP

Toolbox and then reopen it after the device is in a "Ready" state;
otherwise an error message might be generated.

o It is possible for dialog boxes to appear behind the browser window when

using Save Settings, Scan to, or other functions within the HP Toolbox.
Either minimize the browser to find the open dialog box or look for a
flashing icon on your taskbar.

o Running the HP Toolbox prevents the computer from entering Standby or

hibernation mode.

o Using firewall protection software will prevent the HP Toolbox from

working unless the various HP Toolbox components are not blocked when
alerted by the firewall software.

o Setting the "Internet Zone Security" above "Medium" or disabling Active

Scripting within the Internet Security Settings of the browser might
prevent the HP Toolbox from working or cause it to open blank pages.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

When operating in a Windows environment, the CD-ROM setup or installation
software detects the version of the operating system that you are running. The
software installs in the language that you select. For example, if you are running
an English version of Windows and have the language preference set to Spanish,
the installation utility will install the Spanish version of the all-in-one software for
the appropriate Windows version.

INSTALLATION OPTIONS

The following methods are available for installing printer drivers and software
components for the printer.

o Typical. This method of installation installs the most commonly used HP

all-in-one components.

o Custom. This method allows you to add or delete any of the HP all-in-one

components.

The following is a list of available components:

o HP LaserJet 3015/3020/3030/3380 PCL 6 printer driver. This component is

the best for printing. The PCL 6 printer driver provides the best overall
performance, and prints exactly as it appears.

o HP LaserJet 3015/3020/3030/3380 PS printer driver. This component

enables the PS printer driver to print and to gain access to the PostScript
level 2 features of the printer.

o HP Toolbox and Fax Management. Use the HP Toolbox to monitor the

status of the product, examine and change product settings, gain access
to fax and scan software functionality, have product-alert functionality,
and open troubleshooting and "How Do I...?" help content.

o Screen Fonts. This component matches TrueType fonts to ensure that the

text appears exactly as it will be printed.
